HPI Check Comparison Explained:

Our comparison table above outlines the key differences between car data check products. We believe that the RAC Vehicle History Check is the most comprehensive vehicle check on the market, and now you can see how it distinguishes itself from the AA, Autotrader and HPI Check.

A car data check is a great source when comparing vehicles as it details the running costs, vehicle tax banding and fuel efficiency. Fuel economy is an important decision-making factor for many reasons, not least because it can help save you money. An RAC Vehicle History Check is the only product that can tell you the running costs of your desired vehicle, helping you to decide which car is most appropriate for your driving patterns.

How to understand a vehicle check

  • What is a VIN match? - A vehicle identification number is unique to each car and is used to identify your car. It's normally a series of numbers and letters that can be located on the vehicle, such as the corner of the dashboard, or off the vehicle in specific documents such as the owner manual, or registration card. If the VIN numbers do not match on each of these locations, or begin with ‘SABTVRO’, then this means it has been re-stamped by the Ministry of Transport and raises questions about the true identity and age of the vehicle.

  • What are commin MOT faults? - Common MOT faults are those identified as reasons why a specific make and model of vehicle may fail an MOT. These can include breaking issues, faulty electrics, dysfunctional lightbulbs or signal lights, tyre problems such as pressure and condition, and broken mirrors, wipers and washers.

  • What is vehicle tax banding? - Vehicle tax is currently set based on CO2 emissions, although in the past the rates of tax have been set based on engine size. For cars that have been registered since March 2001, car tax rates are based on thirteen car tax bands (A to M) and each band is defined by being defined by the range of CO2 emissions.

We source our data from the police, DVLA, finance companies and other relevant parties to provide you with the most complete profile of your desired vehicle. With an RAC Vehicle History Check you can feel secure when buying your next used car.
